30-Day Challenge_Session 15, Settling the Mind in Its Natural State_1

Here is the fifteenth audio installment from the 30-Day Mindfulness Challenge, a progression of 30 consecutive days of one-hour meditation classes I am teaching at Mountain Yoga in South Lake Tahoe, CA.  Follow from afar or catch up on live classes you missed.

  • Choosing the more subtle object of mental appearances to promote vividness
  • stability of attention becomes stillness of awareness
  • stillness of awareness depends on remaining an impassive witness to what ever mental appearance arises

Hi Doug. This poem reminds me of our practice in watching the parade of mental appearances as an impassive witness. Love, Laura

This being human is a guest house.
    Every morning a new arrival.

    A joy, a depression, a meanness,
    some momentary awareness comes
    as an unexpected visitor.

    Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
    who violently sweep your house
    empty of its furniture,
    still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
    for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

    Be grateful for whatever comes.
    because each has been sent
    as a guide from beyond.
